Heat Pump Troubles? Tips To Try First | McWilliams Heating, Cooling and PlumbingHeat Pump Troubles? Tips to Try First. Is your heat pump having problems? While heat pumps can run a long time without any problems, on occasion, a problem will occur. Before you call in an HVAC contractor, there are a few heat pump troubleshooting tips for you to try:

If The Heat Pump Or Air Handler Isn’t Running:

  • Check the breaker box or fuse box. If any of the HVAC circuits have popped, reset the breaker or replace the fuse. Then try turning on the system again.

If The Heat Pump Is Getting Power But Not Turning On

  • Check the thermostat. Someone may have turned it off or adjusted the temperature too much. If the thermostat runs on batteries, make sure the batteries are good.
  • Check the air handler’s drip pan. As the air handler moves air about, it can also extract moisture from it. It normally drips down into a drip pan and out of the house. If that drain is clogged, a switch will disable the air handler. Clean the drain and reset the switch.

If The Heat Pump Isn’t Heating Properly

  • Check the air filter. If it’s clogged, it can hamper the ability of the system to heat the home. Change the filter.
  • Make sure the thermostat is in heat mode.
  • Check the house for blocked vents or air returns.

If The Heat Pump Isn’t Cooling Properly

  • Check the air filter. If clogged, change it.
  • Make sure the thermostat is in cooling mode
  • Check the house for blocked vents or air returns.

If your heat pump troubleshooting efforts don’t get the system back up and running, it’s time to call in an HVAC professional to repair it. Contact McWilliams Heating, Cooling and Plumbing. We proudly serve our neighbors in Lufkin, Nacogdoches, and Crockett.
