Air pollution is a big concern in Lufkin. Of course, you want the air around you to be clean and breathable. But did you know that the air in your home can be far more polluted than the air outside? Fortunately, a good air filter in your HVAC system can reduce these contaminants and keep your home’s air fresh and clean. But in order for it to work properly, regular air filter replacement is essential.

As the air cycles through your HVAC system, the air filter captures and removes the contaminants, in order to keep them from getting into the unit and causing damage. But over time, the contaminants build up in the filter, and it can’t do its job properly anymore. In addition to poorer air quality, this can lead to several problems:

  1. Reduced airflow. The more clogged your air filter becomes, the harder it is for air to get past it. Without regular air filter replacement, your airflow will be reduced to a trickle. Eventually, if the filter gets clogged enough, your system can even start blowing more dust and contaminants into your house than their were before.
  2. Higher energy bills. The lower your airflow, the longer it takes to heat or cool your home to its desired temperature. And the longer it takes, the longer your HVAC system has to run to make your home comfortable. This can drive your energy bills through the roof.
  3. Shorter life expectancy. Having the system run longer to make your home comfortable puts extra stress on your system’s motor. Over time, this will cause it to break down more often, and ultimately need to be replaced much sooner.

To ensure clean air and a healthy HVAC system, check your air filter once a month, and replace it at least every three months. If the filter is white, and light can be seen through it, it’s still usable. But if it’s gray and opaque, it’s time to replace.
